There is no expectation for them to abstain from politics (probably another reason rulers weren't super inclined to restore any Witcher schools. Like witchers they could easily kill you, but they are able to obtain much more power in society, and they haven't been rigorously conditioned like Witchers. Sorcerers, however, are the real danger imo. Witchers and Mages aren't scary because they're different, they're scary because they can kill you with a blink and far too many of them endulge that regularly. He killed every single man, woman, and child in that village except for one little girl. He could have just killed those who attacked him but he didn't. The Witcher you meet in 3 who slaughtered an entire village because the elder was cheap and rather than paying him tried to stick a pitchfork in him. Way too many of them ended up letting their gifts go to their head and developed god complexes because of it. The reason Mages and Witchers are feared isn't always just some inherent distrust of outsiders. They wanted total control for themselves and their kind when they weren't trying to kill each other and they rightly got obliterated for it.
They were scheming bastards who liked -ing with northern politics and the balance of power.
There's a reason that the Brotherhood of Sorcerers and the Lodge of Sorcerers ended up being dissolved and destroyed. Kaer Morhen fell because scumbag mages were the people who incited the violence and helped in the attack.
